Norfolk Southern was formed by the merger of the Norfolk & Western Railway and the Southern Railway in 1982.  The Norfolk Southern logo, with its thoroughbred horse and speed lettering, began appearing on locomotives in 1984.  The company grew in 1999 with the split of Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail) between NS and competitor CSX.
